THREE major healthcare providers have closed or filed for bankruptcy in 2025, disrupting care for millions of Americans.
The announcements have made waves throughout communities already impacted by rising medical costs and limited access to care.

Rite Aid, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the US, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.
The company had previously filed for bankruptcy in October 2023.
The company cited massive debt and thousands of lawsuits related to its role in the opioid epidemic.
Since then, it has shuttered hundreds of stores and plans to close hundreds more in the months ahead.

According to CNN, Rite Aid is attempting to restructure and sell off remaining stores to rival chains to survive.
But in many communities – especially rural or underserved areas – that promise is already falling short.
PHARMACY WOES
Local pharmacies are disappearing, prescriptions are harder to fill, and customers have reported issues transferring their medical records.
Meanwhile, Walgreens has also scaled back its physical footprint, closing dozens of stores in early 2025.
The company said in January it was reviewing its portfolio and shutting underperforming locations to focus on more profitable ones.
Walgreens closures add another blow to communities already reeling from pharmacy shortages.
The company explained that the closures are part of a “footprint optimization program.”
Customers in affected areas are facing longer drives and fewer options for prescriptions, vaccinations, and routine care.
HOSPITAL CLOSURES
At the same time, Prospect Medical Holdings, a major hospital network operating in several states, has filed for bankruptcy.
Multiple hospitals under its umbrella have either closed or significantly downsized, particularly in areas already struggling with access to care.
In Pennsylvania, more than six Prospect-owned hospitals have either scaled back operations or ceased emergency services altogether.
That’s led to overcrowding in neighboring hospitals and longer wait times for emergency care.
The collapse of three key players in healthcare – one in retail pharmacy, another in national drugstores, and a third in hospital care – has left patients and providers in a state of uncertainty.
“It is devastating and disgraceful blow to our communities, our health care workers, and every patient who has ever relied on our local hospital system,” Pennsylvania state senator Tim Kearney said in a statement.

HEALTHCARE IN DANGER
Labor unions have raised alarms about widespread layoffs and missed paychecks.
Rite Aid workers have been laid off with little notice, and Prospect employees in some regions have reportedly gone months without pay, according to Connecticut Public.
As healthcare costs continue to soar, some lawmakers are pushing for investigations into the financial mismanagement that contributed to these collapses – and into what protections can be put in place to stop it from happening again.
