On June 7, Chinese developer Seasun Games announced that its original near-future sci-fi mech combat game Mecha BREAK will launch globally on July 2. The game will launch simultaneously on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Since its trailer debut at The Game Awards (TGA) in 2023, Mecha BREAK has become a hot topic among Chinese gamers.
Why it matters: “Mech” is short for “mechanical” and refers to a genre featuring large, piloted robots often used in combat or futuristic settings. This title, with the potential to bring Chinese sci-fi games to the world, is worth watching to see if it can become the new global benchmark for mech IPs.
Details: Mecha BREAK currently holds the fifth spot on Steam’s global wishlist. According to the developer, the game has surpassed five million pre-registrations worldwide.
- Mecha BREAK is a team-based online shooter set in a future where pilots use mechs to battle in contaminated zones caused by a mysterious mineral. Players choose from five mech classes: Attacker, Defender, Supporter, Brawler, and Sniper to complete objectives and uncover the truth behind a global catastrophe.
- As part of the launch rewards, 12 mechs in the game will be unlocked with no restrictions. The game’s theme song, UPGRADE(D), is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, known for his work on the hit anime Attack on Titan.
- Last night, the game’s producer Kris conducted a live gameplay demo. After the game launches, more environments will be introduced, including lunar and underwater battlefields, Kris said. On June 23, we will provide a detailed overview of the new maps, gameplay modes, bosses, and each mech, along with their associated mechanics, lore, and worldbuilding, Kris added.
Context: The game began open testing on February 23, and by February 25, total player count across major platforms exceeded 1.76 million, with peak concurrent users on PC surpassing 300,000, according to the company.
