This is not a first for Anbernic, the retro gaming specialist once again offers a more than familiar look console. After having released the RG35XXSP in a format having convinced us, here is the RG34XX, a machine that fully assumes its inspiration Game Boy Advance to the smallest detail. From design to performance through the screen, this portable console promises to revive the big hours of the Nintendo portable game, while adding a welcome touch of modernity.

A design that instantly revives nostalgia
It seems that this time, the manufacturer has made all the efforts to dive the players in full nostalgia, by finding exactly the sensations of yesteryear. Here we find the dimensions and design of the original game Boy Advance identically. The handling is instantly familiar for anyone who has already held the Nintendo portable console in his hands. The choice of colors further reinforces this impression, with in particular our indigo model which seems straight out of 2001.

The manufacturing quality is very good, rather far from the standards of certain Chinese consoles at low prices. The plastic used gives off the impression of reassuring solidity, without any cracking or play in the assembly. The buttons and the directional cross offer a remarkably close feeling, with a touch whose calibration will delight purists. We will notice the presence of new keys such as the L2 and R2 triggers, placed where the cartridge port on the Nintendo console is located. The two touches above buttons A and B will also be useful for console games outside the GBA, but also as shortcut keys.
GBA games sublimated by an exceptional screen
The 3.4 inch IPS screen is undoubtedly the greatest success of this RG34XX. With its definition of 720 × 480 pixels and its 3: 2 format, it ensures a perfect scale of Game Boy Advance games. The pixels are displayed with remarkable sharpness, without the slightest vague or visible artifact. The vibrant colors and the angle of generous vision allow you to rediscover the classics of the GBA in their best light.
The maximum brightness is rather sufficient to play comfortably indoors. Outside, the screen is struggling more about resisting reflections, but remains usable as long as you avoid direct sunlight. The luminosity adjustment to 6 levels allows you to easily adapt the display to its environment. We will appreciate here the presence of a screen protection provided in the box.
Note also that the presence of shaders to choose allows you to find several effects of the pixel grid or sweep line effects, offering retro visual effects as close as possible to the original consoles.
Performances cut for GBA emulation
Under the hood, the RG34XX has an Allwinner H700 chip, supported by 1 GB of RAM. This configuration ensures perfect emulation of Game Boy Advance games, without the slightest slowdown or any sound problem. The loading times are minimal, and the responsiveness of the orders does not suffer from any latency.
The emulation of other old systems is just as convincing, especially for the NES, the Super Nintendo or the original Game Boy. The first PlayStation of the name also runs without a hitch, even if some more demanding titles can cause a few slowdowns. On the other hand, no need to hope to run correctly Nintendo 64 or PlayStation Portable games, the computing power quickly showing its limits on these more recent systems.
A pleasant, but perfectible user interface
One of the points of the RG34XX which did not convince us perfectly is its original user interface. If great efforts have been made by Anbernic, the OS is rather functional, but not always intuitive. The navigation in the menus sometimes lacks fluidity, and certain important options are buried in unsuccessful submenus. Fortunately, the installation of a custom firmware makes it possible to greatly improve the user experience as well as the performance of the machine, even if this manipulation requires some technical knowledge. For the purposes of our test, we used the original OS as well as Knulli, which proves to be a much more complete solution.

Roma management (copies of your original games) is done via microSD card, with two slots available. The first hosts the operating system, while the second is dedicated to games. This separation allows you to easily switch between different versions of firmware without risking losing your game library. Obviously, it is still possible to put all of the OS and your ROM on one and the same card.
Comfortable autonomy for a slow load
The 3500 mAh battery provides very honorable autonomy, varying between 6 and 8 hours depending on the use and brightness of the screen. Energy management is intelligent, with a customizable automatic standby and a specific battery indicator. The recharging is carried out via USB-C, with a full charging time, much long of approximately 2 h 30. The console does not accept rapid load, limiting a 5V charger. It was also difficult to find a compatible charger.
A appreciable modern connectivity
RG34XX does not ignore modern connectivity. The mini-HDMI port allows you to play on the big screen, even if the lack of support for external controllers limits the interest of this functionality. Bluetooth 4.2 authorizes the connection of wireless headphones, a particularly appreciable option in mobility.

The presence of Wi-Fi 5 GHz greatly facilitates the firmware update and the transfer of files, even if the network interface deserves to be more intuitive. A 3.5 mm jack port completes the whole for lovers of its wired.
A rather nice value for money
At less than 80 euros, the RG34XX is positioned as a rather convincing economic choice. It offers an almost perfect GBA emulation experience, supplemented by excellent compatibility with 8 and 16 -bit systems.
The few compromises granted, in particular in terms of the user interface and the brightness of the screen, are amply justified with regard to the Price. Manufacturing quality and emulation performance place the bar very high for competition in this price range.
The Anbernic RG34XX is only 75.99 euros at Geekbuying with the code Nnfr34128 !
