In a few days, Tony Vinciquerra will leave office. On January 2, the CEO of Sony Pictures will hand over to Ravi Ahuja, current COO. During an interview with the Los Angeles Timesthe 70-year-old businessman spoke about the events that marked his career. The monumental failure of Madame Web was obviously discussed, and in particular the reasons which led to such an economic disaster.
Earlier this year, SJ Clarkson brought together Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor and Tahar Rahim to tell the story of a paramedic who discovers she has clairvoyant gifts. Her path will cross that of three young girls called to do great things, but threatened by a mysterious man. The start is catastrophic, the public does not support Sony Pictures’ proposal. If this is not the first time that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe crashes in theaters, the failure of Morbius could still be attributed to the pandemic and its consequences on the film industry. Madame Web should take advantage of the recovery to stand out among the most popular superheroic offerings of the moment, this is all the more true as Marvel had left the field open by only offering one film in theaters this year.
“They’re not terrible films”
According to Tony Vinciquerra, this is to be attributed to the murderous criticism published by the press.
“The press simply crucified him. It wasn’t a bad movie, it did very well on Netflix. For some reason the press decided they didn’t want us to make these films based on Kraven and Madame Web. The critics simply destroyed them. They did it with Venom too, but the public loved it and made the films huge successes. They’re not terrible films.”
Madame Web obtained an average of 11% sur Rotten Tomatoes on the press side, distributed over 266 critiques. The public was in fact more conciliatory, with 55% positive reviews. The requirements fares better on paper with 17% positive opinions for journalists (139 critics) compared to 74% for spectators. The latter is not, however, promised to be a huge success; it got off to a worse start than its predecessors. He only reported 15 million dollars worldwide for its first weekend, figures which confirm the imminent end of the license evolving around the antagonists of the web weaver.
What future for the Spider-Man universe?
Kraven the Hunter is officially the final film from the former SPUMC. No film is officially in development or filming, with Sony Pictures finally appearing to decide to stop the costs. A strategy confirmed half-heartedly by Tony Vinciquerra. The resigning CEO explains. : “I think we need to rethink it (the cinematic universe, editor’s note), simply because it is doomed to failure. If we make another film, it will also be destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is”.
The objective for Sony Pictures is to hatch a fourth installment of the adventures of Spider-Man with Tom Holland. But on this aspect too, things seem more complicated than expected. We can also note that Sony Pictures has had some success with the adventures of Miles Morales in animation, proof if any were needed that the public and the press do not reject all of the studio’s proposals outright. The third opus has nevertheless fallen a little behind schedule, it should not take over our screens in 2025.
