If the whole world will have its eyes fixed on its Superman next year, a film supposed to initiate the new turn taken by DC Studios and install the universe that he thought up for Clark Kent and his colleagues, it is however through an animated series announced for a while that James Gunn officially established his era and his DCU.
Yes, finally, by dint of maintaining the communication around the next adaptation of the Man of Steel, inevitably awaited after the passage of Henry Cavill, the popularity of his incarnation with fans and his true/false return as Superman in the bosom of James Gunnwe had almost forgotten that the first element of chapter 1 of the new DCU, called “ Gods and Monsters » was none other than the animated series Creature Commandos. And as its name suggests, it is with monsters that Gunn chose to begin writing his new story.

First production of the DCU
This is ultimately not that exotic for the connoisseur public and even those less aware of all the news of DC superheroes since this animated series is ultimately only the direct sequel to the Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn himself three years earlier. At the time, the father of Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel had already officiated the firefighters on duty for DC, having to rehabilitate the team of broken arms staged by David Ayer and worn by Margot Robbie and Will Smith. The one released in 2016 and which flopped, to the great dismay of Warner Bros. From this project came the excellent series Peacemakerwith Gunn still at the helm.

Nothing is more logical to begin an era with such important stakes than to play somewhere at home and Creature Commandos embraces all the qualities and ingredients of a James Gunn production: humor, action, spectacle and emotion. All served with a story again without taking any risks at first glance, since it is a direct sequel to the Suicide Squad by the same director.
Monsters and Co.
After the events of Corto Maltese and the losses recorded, the always unpleasant Amanda Waller is now prohibited from calling on supervillains to carry out her missions. It is therefore from the side of the monsters that she will have to draw to do the dirty work and she rises in record time la Task Force M (M for monsters) with Rick Flag Sr, father of Rick Flag who we discovered and then cried at the cinema.
Like these latest productions, James Gunn offers us a panel of explosive, funny, tortured characters to whom we can become attached very quickly. A bride born from a morbid experience and originally promised to Dr. Frankenstein’s monster (the Bride), a robot designed to shoot down Nazis (G.I Robot), a hyper intelligent fish woman (Nina Mizursky), a phosphorescent skeleton (Dr Phosphorus), a rodent (Weasel) already seen in the previous Suicide Squad and survivor of the famous project “ Starfish » and in the middle of all this a soldier marked by the death of his son.
Obviously all these characters will be on the grill, understand that the main story – the protection of the princess (Ilana) of a fictional country (Pokolistan) against a witch with superpowers (Circe), directly from the kingdom of the Amazons dear to Wonder Woman – will lead them each time to relive their past in the form of flashbacks. And for once, the recipe is effective.
Casting, humor, situation: everything is there
The same goes for the animation, a little rigid in the dialogue phases (hello Invincible) but particularly convincing during moments of fight. And there are a lot of them, sometimes with incredible violence. Creature Commandos always flirts with the line of political correctness and animation or not, it is not to be shown to all pairs of eyes obviously. But the recipe has the merit of being particularly effective.
Already for the good reasons mentioned above. But also for these: an interesting ease of consumption, with 7 episodes of approximately 25 minutes. A little short at first glance and yet everything that needs to be said or shown fits within the indicated timing. Add to this a first-rate vocal casting – it is in this configuration that we were able to see the episodes – carried in particular by Franck Grilloa Marvel defector who lends his voice to Rick Flag Sr, Mother Chalotra (The Witcher) who does the same with Cerce, and Viola Davis necessarily for Amanda Waller and you have a truly seductive experience, perhaps even more so for those who discover the universe of James Gunn through this means.
And now, Superman
Because it’s really about that, about him and his style. Behind a story as thick as that of the previous Suicide Squad, the boss of DC Studios does what he does best, making those left behind human and endearing and telling touching stories, full of messages through them, always helped by his brother, Sean, to provide humorous support with one or two characters as is the case here (GI Robot and Weasel). And the formula works wonderfully.
On the other hand, if it constitutes a good introduction, she is in no way a risk taker for Gunn. And even less of a guarantee for the sequel, since we doubt that Superman will be approached in the same way and with the same standards. In July we will have to convince again, with completely different expectations. Until then, there is always time to enjoy Creature Commandosthe first two episodes of which are already available on Max and which will then be released at the rate of one episode per week.
