Your initial GPU choice is final since laptop GPUs are almost always soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Where past versions of DLSS could generate a single frame in between each frame that the GPU renders, DLSS 4 leverages expanded AI inference on the GPU’s powerful Tensor Cores, generating up to three times as many new frames per original frame for dramatically higher frame rates and smoother gameplay. Other connections: Beyond the high-throughput Thunderbolt 5 and speedy Wi-Fi 7, we do recommend looking for the ports that you use most frequently. If you’re routinely connecting to TVs or projectors over HDMI, or need to grab photo and video files from a memory card, look for those ports. You’ll always find it more convenient to have the required port built in than to have to remember to bring an adapter along.
Build Quality and Ergonomics

Chassis: CNC-milled aluminum remains the gold standard, providing unmatched rigidity and a premium, cool-to-the-touch feel. Magnesium alloys and carbon fiber are used for lighter builds, but they can often feel less substantial, despite providing similar durability.
Screen refresh rates: High-refresh-rate displays (120Hz-plus) aren’t common on mainstream systems, but provide fluid, natural scrolling and interface navigation, and not just for gaming. All of our advice about OLED versus mini-LED still applies, but it’s worth paying a little extra for a faster-refreshing panel. Gaming laptops, by definition, will come with 144Hz or faster displays.

You should welcome a thick chassis specifically designed to handle high-wattage GPUs, as opting for a thin-and-light gaming laptop will inevitably result in a sacrifice of raw performance due to thermal throttling. Your minimum recommended specifications should start at 32GB of RAM, a GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM, and a 120Hz display with a resolution of at least 1440p.
Finally, if you are a mobile professional—such as a consultant or executive—your goal is not raw speed but unplugged endurance. Your primary focus should be on battery life and NPU efficiency, meaning you should target a MacBook or a Snapdragon X Elite device for true all-day productivity, prioritizing application speed-per-watt over maximum clock speeds.
