Tesla is in the process of deploying its FSD (Full Self-Driving) in this region of Europe. An initiative made possible by the new regulations in force, particularly in the Netherlands. But all this news around the American manufacturer seems to have given ideas to some.
A group of hackers would have indeed succeeded in circumventing the georestrictions put in place by Tesla with the FSD. They managed to “make the car believe” that it was located in a geographical area where FSD was legal (like the United States for example). Autonomous driving was then available on our European roads. An illegal practice at the moment.
A common practice?
According to information collected by our colleagues at 01 netthis Tesla “jailbreak” would have been spotted in several regions of the world. In Europe, Japan and South Korea, clever people have managed to circumvent the protection measures put in place by Tesla.
In China, the solution would have been massively shared. The specialized media Teslarati talks about more than 100,000 “modified” vehicles in circulation in the country.
Tesla reacts, a little late
After months of silence, Tesla has just reacted to this problem which is gaining importance. The automaker started with disable FSD remotely on modified vehicles. But the brand’s reactions go well beyond that.
Tesla has excluded certain users from the brand’s autonomous driving program. In other words, they will never again have access to FSD on their car, even if this technology becomes legal in a few years in their country. A way to severely punish hackers and limit the risks of reselling modified vehicles. Practice which seems common in China.
A question of responsibility
Tesla finds itself in a very unique position. On the one hand, the brand is pushing for FSD to be legalized as quickly as possible in as many countries as possible. Tesla’s number one selling point compared to other electric cars, this autonomous driving system attracts as much as it frightens. With him, Tesla hopes that its sales can soar.
At the same time, hacks around its geoblocking program are giving it bad publicity. Above all, the unblocking of FSD in regions where it is illegal puts the brand in a very delicate position. In the event of an accident, Tesla could be held responsible and sue for negligence. The brand must therefore combat these illegal practices, while at the same time encouraging the authorities of the merits of its system.
