London will have two constructions tied at height that will share the title of the tallest building in Western Europe. In the Southwark district we find the famous skick skicks. Its 309.6 meters high, combined with its pyramidal design and its glass walls, make this work of the Italian architect Renzo Piano stand out from any perspective.
On the other side of the Thames river, in Square Mile, a 309.6 -meter high building called 1 Undershaft will be built. The project has been recently approved by the London City Corporation, which has found an opportunity to respond to “to respond better to the needs of offices after the pandemic.”
A new modern office space for the city
The original idea to carry out this work emerged more than a decade ago and, although it received the approval of the authorities in 2016, it never materialized. Now, the updated proposal seems to be much more aimed. The new building will rise among the iconic skyscrapers “The Gherkin” y “The Leadenhall”. As expected, it is a crowded area of buildings. The solution to make space: demolish the “St Helen’s” tower located between them.
When it is finished, the building will offer 154,156 square meters of office spaces, something that according to the authorities of the city and those in charge of the project will be very necessary. There will also be with a high public space of 1,000 square meters of free access. As we can see in the renders, 1 Undershaft will also have a garden of 2,500 square meters, but it will not be at the street level, but 42 meters high and shot with glass.
This space is expected not to be reserved only for people who work in the offices, but be Open to the public. So visitors should also be able to contemplate good views of the city and enjoy gastronomic services in the place. The ground floor will have a green area, another without steps access and a giant screen that will be used to project images during the events.
Demolition tasks will begin this year. Then the works of the new building should begin, which would extend for about five years. In the event that the plan follows its course, towards the end of the London decade it will have two buildings with the same height, in different districts, but connected by the London Bridge. Touch to wait to know if this project will finally come true or suffer some other modification.
