He Government of Spain has awarded another 24.5 million of euros for the universalization of ultrafast broadband deployment in homes and companies in the country. The award, which will be carried out by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, is part of the final resolution of the UNICO Broadband program in its 2024 call. It is expected to facilitate the arrival of fiber to some 15,000 homes and companies in Spain.
There will be six operators in charge of developing the deployment that will be undertaken through this award, included in the actions of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and which is financed by Next Generation EU European funds.
The sum of these 24.5 million euros to what was previously invested in the digital structuring of Spain since 2018 now reaches 1,060 million euros. Currently, Spain’s fixed connectivity network is considered the largest in Europe, according to the latest OECD report.
Antonio Hernando, Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructureshas pointed out that «This new call culminates a collective success achieved with public-private collaboration. Spain is the European country with the best fiber optic connectivity and the third among OECD countries. We have more than 95% of homes connected to ultra-fast broadband and that is allowing Spain to consolidate itself as a rising pole in the global technological field.«.
Speaking about the particularities of bringing the connection even to hard-to-reach points, Hernando highlighted that «A country with such an area, with so much orographic particularity and with thousands of scattered populations manages to universalize access to fixed connectivity is the greatest guarantee of opportunities in the digital age. In addition, for remote places we have the Conectate35.es satellite service, providing fixed access anywhere in the country.«.
