Apple Intelligence will use Google’s Gemini
After around a year and a half of no promising results from within, Apple has partnered with Google and asked to use the latter’s flagship AI model Gemini for its products.
The revamped Siri that we were shown in 2024 — the ad for which Apple removed from its YouTube channel — will use Gemini. Context awareness, cohesion between both system and third-party applications, and the ability to fetch information from user data stored on the device, most functions will use Google Gemini for now.
That doesn’t mean that Apple isn’t working on its own AI models anymore, but it does mean that the iPhone 17, the MacBook, and the iPad are finally going to catch up to their respective competition. It also means that Apple users will finally be able to experience what others have been using for quite a while now. And, of course, Apple can now also attract customers who value AI services on their devices. So, when is this miraculous moment finally taking place? So much sooner than you might have thought.
New Siri to be unveiled next month
Yep, according to a fresh new report, the improved Apple Intelligence and Siri features might be unveiled as early as next month, which would be February.
Now, granted, this likely doesn’t mean that everything new is coming to your iPhone 17 next month. However, Apple is expected to show off the new Siri carrying out tasks that the company promised in 2024. Except this time, it won’t just be a staged event but an actual demonstration of Apple Intelligence working on Google Gemini.
I don’t think I need to stress just how much of a major milestone this is going to be for Apple. No, falling behind in AI hasn’t really impacted the company’s performance yet, but it was only a matter of time. AI on smartphones is improving at an exponential rate, and customers will be looking for the best features sooner rather than later.
A lot of behind-the-scenes stuff has taken place over at Apple for the company to reach this point. Many high-profile employees have left and signed up with companies that are faring better in the AI landscape. A ton of analysis reports have also come out about Apple ever since it became clear that it wouldn’t be able to get Siri ready on time. It’s just a relief to know that the company is finally about to make progress.
No better time to get an iPhone 17
After Apple shows off the revamped Siri and Apple Intelligence features next month (fingers crossed), we can expect the new tools to hit the company’s products soon after. Even if all of the updates are going to officially launch in September, beta versions of iOS and other Apple operating systems will let us use them before.
I genuinely think that this is the best time to switch to iPhone or upgrade from an older model. The iPhone 17 is a great phone, and it will now finally be getting features that rival phones have had for ages. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 will, hopefully, launch with all of these new AI features already perfected.
Now, all that remains to be seen is whether Apple’s internal AI development is going to lead somewhere fruitful.
