The Samsung Galaxy S25s weren’t the only stars of January’s Unpacked event. The South Korean manufacturer spoke at length about its new range made up of three models… and a future fourth smartphone. Indeed, Samsung ended its presentation by unveiling a mysterious Galaxy S25 Edge with an ultra-thin (Slim) design that we have already been able to approach.
The second big surprise concerns Project Moohan, the mixed reality headset from Samsung and Google. The future rival of the Apple Vision Pro had already been partly revealed at the end of 2024, but the two partners had mainly mentioned its Android XR platform. It will be the key to allowing this headset to convince, but Samsung will also need to take care of the design and technical aspect of its new headset.
Samsung shows off its headset
The South Korean giant has finally decided to display its helmet for the first time in a corner of its Unpacked event. The opportunity for us to take some photos of the mixed reality headset developed with Google and share them with you.
As we indicated after the publication of a first image in December, the XR headset has a design very close to that of the Apple Vision Pro. We also have to be content with these images since Samsung did not make an announcement on stage or a demonstration. Communication around the mysterious Project Moohan is carefully organized.
Samsung’s strategy around this headset is reminiscent of that of the Galaxy Fold. It allows you to control the calendar, arouse curiosity and analyze public reactions.
A headset developed with Google and Qualcomm
With this “Moohan” headset (which means “infinite” in Korean), Samsung, Google and Qualcomm hope to play a bad trick on Apple. The Apple brand’s best enemies display the ambition to show “the infinite possibilities of extended reality” with this helmet. Despite the absence of an official announcement, we are starting to understand the role of each person in this project a little better.
Unsurprisingly, Samsung is in the process of offering the headset in its name. In addition to a solid reputation and experience in virtual reality, the South Korean group has factories and know-how for screens in particular. Thanks to Qualcomm, Project Moohan uses a Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2 chip specifically for mixed reality. This is an optimized version of the chip present in the Meta Quest 3, the result of a “strategic collaboration” between Samsung and Qualcomm.
Finally, we know that Google is actively participating by offering the new Android XR platform. This version of the operating system targets AR (augmented reality), VR (mixed reality) and MR (mixed reality) headsets. It will not be limited to Samsung devices, but Project Moohan will be an opportunity for Google to display its ambitions. The interface is quite similar to that of visionOS, Apple’s operating system for the Vision Pro.
In addition to artificial intelligence, the Mountain View giant’s applications play an important role. We have already seen that Google Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Photos or Docs have a version adapted for mixed reality.
Questions remain unanswered
Expected sometime in 2025, Project Moohan leaves many questions unanswered. Samsung has not yet revealed the full characteristics of the headset, its commercial name or its Price and release date. We are also awaiting information on its real autonomy and more information on its functionalities.
We may have to wait until summer and Unpacked dedicated to Samsung’s next folding smartphones to find out more. According to information from Bloomberg, the headset would cost less than Apple’s. In France, the Vision Pro costs 3,999 euros.
