End clap for DeX on Windows, Samsung’s solution which allows you to use your smartphone or Galaxy tablet like a computer. Appearing on high-end models from 2017, the functionality has been regularly enriched until it has become one of the strengths of Galaxy devices. However, Samsung plans to stop fees with DeX for Windows PC when the update to One UI 7 arrives. While the functionalities of this version remain shrouded in mystery, the page dedicated to DeX confirms the bad news. On the French version of the Samsung site, we can already read: “DeX for PC on Windows OS will cease to be supported starting with One UI 7. We encourage customers to connect their mobile phone and computer using the “Link to Windows” feature”.
DeX for PC will disappear, not the DeX function
If you’ve never used Samsung DeX, this feature allows you to use your smartphone or tablet like a computer. The tool works wirelessly and allows you to find office and multimedia functions on a large screen. With a tablet, it is possible to choose between New DeX modes to keep the tablet interface and Classic DeX to get a desktop environment. Samsung now invites you to turn to the Link to Windows application, which offers similar functionality. Stopping support for the Windows application seems logical on the part of the South Korean giant, close to Microsoft. Furthermore, it is important to note that the shutdown only concerns the application and not the entire DeX function. Samsung product owners will still be able to connect a compatible device to an external monitor or display to access DeX.
Expected to be a big update, One UI 7 is taking its time before arriving on recent Samsung Galaxy models. The brand has not mentioned a date and we still do not know if the update will arrive before the end of 2024. The first eligible devices will be the Galaxy S24, Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 or the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. The future Galaxy S25s, expected in January, should land directly under One UI 7, an overlay based on Android 15.
Note that the arrival of One UI 7 would also bring about the end of Edge Panels, an iconic feature of Samsung devices. Again, the measure only concerns the third-party store and the side panel of Galaxy devices will remain available. However, Samsung seems to want to make its interface much cleaner and no longer clutter up with overly specific functions.
