Huawei surprised the sector (and the United States) last year with the presentation of the Mate 60 series. The range had the particularity of embedding a Kirin 9000S chip engraved in 7 nm, a technological feat from Huawei. Indeed, 7 nanometer engraving is nothing extraordinary compared to the most powerful chips of the moment, but it was an unexpected progression for a Chinese chip. Deprived of American technologies, Huawei technically no longer has the possibility of accessing the latest chip technologies and working with founders such as TSMC. The work of HUAWEI and Chinese founder SMIC has sparked numerous reactions and the smartphone manufacturer is preparing to unveil the Mate 70 series.
Mate 70 design appears on a Chinese store
The new range of smartphones is already available for pre-order on Vmall.com, Huawei’s official online store. The site confirms the existence of a series made up of three smartphones, namely the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro+. For the entire range, there are eight different colors and five variants.
A first image above all allows you to discover the design of the smartphone. Contrary to the latest design trends, Huawei seems to keep the same lines and curves as the previous series. The layout of the photo block is even reminiscent of that of the Mate 50 that the brand launched in 2022. The rounded edges also remain present, while the industry tends to abandon curved or rounded edges in favor of flatter edges. Huawei’s bet is daring, but it can also help it stand out from the crowd.
We will also have to wait for the official announcement to fully discover the Mate 70, but the beginnings of success are already emerging. According to available information, more than 130,000 units were pre-ordered in the first ten hours after pre-orders opened.
Huawei could still surprise thanks to its OS
The technical characteristics of this new line remain unclear. It is rumored that the Huawei Mate 70 will feature a new HiSilicon Kirin chip, the very likely Kirin 9100. The brand would take a new step by offering a chip engraved in 6 nm, compared to 7 nm for the previous generation. Performance would be comparable to that of a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which would not be enough to bring Huawei back to the level of its main competitors.
In photos, the series should have a circular module housing four photo sensors. We can expect Huawei to jump into the silicon-carbon battery trend to offer greater capacities. On the Mate 60 Pro, there is a 5,000 mAh battery compatible with 88 W fast charging. The 6,000 mAh barrier could be crossed with this new series, while retaining 88 W wired fast charging. The Mate 70 would add support for 50W wireless charging and up to 20W reverse wireless charging.

The big news in the Mate 70 family could come from the operating system. All models will feature the new HarmonyOS Next system, replacing Android in all of the company’s models. It is primarily intended for the Chinese market, a priority for the manufacturer for many months.
