The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is taking several strong measures to combat SPAM calls and SMS in India. The government entity has reported significant cut down and reduction in complaint against SPAM messages and calls. The Telecom Authority issued new directions in August 2024 in which it mandates severe penalties for any entity found violating regulations. This measure not just led to significant results, but also decreased the number of SPAM calls and messages.
Following TRAI’s directive entities which are found exploiting these measures started facing severe penalties or in worst case scenario disconnection of their services. The regulatory also blacklisted these companies for two years and bans them from acquiring new business or resources. This resulted in to notable decline in the complaint against SPAM calls.
As per TRAI, “The number of registered complaints against unregistered senders, as reported by the Access Providers, were 1.89 lakh in August 2024 which have reduced to 1.63 lakh in September 2024 (13% reduction from August 2024) and 1.51 lakh in October 2024 (20% reduction from August 2024).”

To enhance message traceability, TRAI issued Direction on 20th August 2024 and mandated that the trail of all messages from Senders/Principal Entities to recipients must be traceable from 1st November 2024. TRAI organized webinar in order to raise awareness about these measures and action to be taken by PEs and RTMs. The webinar was conducted on 12th November 2024 in association with Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Notably it was attended by over 1000 representatives from entities being regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA and IRDAl.
As per TRAI, with the help of these webinars, more than 13,000 PEs already registered their chains with the respective Access Providers and fur her registration is in progress at a rapid pace. The regulatory has sent several warning notices to all Principal Entities (PEs) and Registered Telemarketers (RTMs) who did not comply with the necessary changes. All the telemarketer now have to comply with the TRAI otherwise either they will be banned from the TRAI or their services will be rejected.
