JASM (TSMC’s Japanese subsidiary) President Yuichi Horita recently announced that TSMC’s first plant in Kumamoto, Japan, will begin mass production by the end of this year, with the initial output supplied to Sony and Denso, according to Taiwanese media outlet Commercial Times. Horita stated that TSMC’s production line in Japan will match the quality of those in Taiwan. The first Kumamoto plant focuses on 22/28nm and 12/16nm processes, while the second Kumamoto plant will produce 6/7nm process chips, as announced during the opening ceremony on Feb. 24. Construction of the second Kumamoto plant is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with mass production scheduled by the end of 2027.
