Whether you subscribe to them individually or as part of a bundle deal, Disney+ and Hulu both have a lot to offer streaming fans. Disney has the ultra-popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, while Hulu brings the heat with tons of original shows and movies from around the world, coupled with American TV shows from network partners. There’s a lot to watch, with new stuff added every day, so I picked out the three best choices for the weekend and the week ahead. We’ve got architectural accomplishments, globe-trotting adventures, and near-future dystopias. The full list of TV shows and movies coming to the streaming services can be found below.
This Week on Hulu and Disney+: PCMag’s Picks
Megastructures: Real Madrid Super Stadium (Disney+, July 18)
There’s something incredibly compelling about taking a beloved building and using modern technology to bring it into the future. Discovery’s Megastructures series of documentaries tackles the Santiago Bernabé, the home of Spanish soccer, as it adds a ton of high-tech features like underground storage for the pitch, a retractable roof, and a 360-degree video scoreboard. Even more amazing, these massive projects were performed while the team was still playing in the stadium!
The Assessment (Hulu, July 19)
There’s a lot of talk in Silicon Valley about birthrate collapse, population replacement, and pronatalism. Sci-Fi sleeper The Assessment taps into all of that. Set in a near future in which reproduction is tightly controlled, couple Mia and Aaryan have jumped through all the hoops and are ready to have a baby. The next step? A brutal and bizarre seven-day evaluation that will push them to the breaking point. Check this one out; it’s extremely good.

Washington Black (Hulu, July 23)
Based on the book by Esi Edugyan, Washington Black looks to be another killer entry in Hulu’s slate of original dramas. Ernest Kingsley Jr. plays the title character, who escapes from a life of slavery on a Barbadian sugar plantation only to be thrown into wild misadventure after misadventure. The show’s been in production since 2019, so hopefully all that time in the kitchen will pay off. Great cast, and they filmed all over the world.
