Slowly but surely, the Harry Potter series is revealing itself a little more. Since the announcement of the project in 2023, HBO has cultivated the mystery surrounding the new adaptation of the adventures of the little wizard with glasses. From distribution to narration, the American channel does not yet seem ready to lift the veil on the details of this immense project. It must be said that the firm does not really have the right to make mistakes, with one of its most lucrative and appreciated intellectual properties. An interview published by the Harry Potter site, owned by Wizarding World, tells us a little more about the approach of producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod.
After mentioning a start of filming in spring 2025, the two creatives discussed the duration of the first burst of episodes. To immortalize the first year ofHarry Potter at Hogwarts, eight hours will be needed. We can therefore expect that eight episodes will be offered to spectators.
“We have 8 hours to tell the first book, so we can dig into the true depths and crevices and see how the language of magic can evolve.”
From the top of its 330 pagesthe work is the least dense of the saga. If Christopher Columbus’ film is undoubtedly the one that has passed the fewest events in silence, eight hours will allow the screenwriters to tell what the public has until now been unable to discover in the cinema. This is particularly true for Peeves, the prankster who will accompany Harry, Ron and Hermione on their adventures at Hogwarts. Gardiner and Mylod have also confirmed its presence: “We will have the opportunity to have fun with Peeves in the corridors”.
We can also expect our heroes to face more challenges during their quest to recover the Philosopher’s Stone, starting with the riddle of the potion imagined by Professor Snape. We can still hope that the following seasons will approach a little closer to ten hours, as things get tougher for the hero. As a reminder, The Order of the Phoenix is by far the densest with no less than 984 pages in its French version at Gallimard.
How is the project progressing?
In addition to the announcements on the progress of the project, the producers spoke about the casting process for the leading trio. Things are going well, 30,000 children have auditioned for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. None have been chosen yet. Mark Mylod admits to having watched each of the videos sent. “There are some cracks”. If we have to wait a little to learn more on the issue, we already know which settings will welcome the new troupe. It is indeed the Leavesden studios which will be used for filming. Mylod, who will act as director, still promises a very different aesthetic. For example, it will involve immortalizing places that have not been shown in the films.
“We started from the premise that Hogwarts is a real place. There will therefore be elements of Georgian architecture, attempts at naturalism. We have the luxury of long-term storytelling. We both love films immensely, they are a creative feat. We will have a bigger sandbox to play in.”
