In early May, Openai published a ticket finally clarifying the capacities of its different versions of Chatgpt, so far sometimes deemed obscure, even for informed users. Even if it is intended for a professional audience, this guide is just as useful for chatgpt plus subscribers, which can access several of these models for $ 20 per month.
A model for each use
In all, five models are now highlighted: GPT-4O, GPT-4.5, O4-Mini, O4-Mini-High and O3. Openai has never really known how to properly name their different models, but know that everyone is designed to excel in very specific tasks.
The most versatile remains GPT-4O, nicknamed “Omni Model”. It is designed for everyday tasks of everyday life: writing of emails, summaries of documents, content creation. Its big asset: it is multimodal, that is to say capable of managing both text and images, audio or even video. It also allows the use of the most recent tools such as personalized GPTs, image generation, data analysis or even advanced voice entry.
But for projects where creativity prevails, it is better to turn to GPT-4.5. OPENAI describes it as the model having the best “emotional intelligence” and a more intuitive capacity to formulate original ideas or to write with an adapted tone. In summary, a good choice to write a letter of customer apologies, a hit LinkedIn post or a pitch marketing.
On the technical reasoning side, Openai offers three models: O4-Mini, O4-Mini-High and O3. O4-Mini is the fastest and lightest. It is distinguished in simple technical tasks: correct a python bug, summarize a scientific article or extract data from a CSV file. It is the model to favor when the speed prevails.
O4-Mini-High takes up the same uses, but in a more in-depth version. He thinks longer to answer more precisely. It is recommended for complex equations, writing SQL queries or popular scientific explanations.
Finally, O3 is the most powerful model for complex analyzes. It excels in long tasks with multiple stages, such as strategic planning, market forecasts or heavy processing of data files. Note that a sixth model, called O1 Pro, is still mentioned, but it is reserved for certain long -format use cases and is no longer highlighted in conventional offers.
With this clarification, Openai tries to align the chatgpt offer with the very diverse expectations of its users, whether developers, communicators, researchers or business leaders. The models have always existed, but they were so far badly differentiated, which led to blind choices.
