A connected watch that doesn’t tell the time. On social networks, on the wrists of influencers and athletes, it is no longer rare to see celebrities promoting the Whoop. This bracelet designed by the brand of the same name, specialized in wearables, is unlike any other available on the market. And for good reason, it does not have any on-board screen. I promise, it’s for a good cause, the company promises: “No screen. No distractions. Nothing but science“. Designed to be worn constantly, the Whoop offers several new features innovative.
Everywhere, all the time
One of the main arguments of Whoo is not to never experience downtime. The bracelet can in fact be worn everywhere and all the time, since it is waterproof. It is also intended to be worn at all times, even when charging. An external battery can in fact be slipped directly under the device when it is worn, in order to recharge its batteries in a few minutes.
It is also possible to wear the bracelet in several places depending on your sporting activity or your preferences, on the biceps or wrist for examplebut also under certain garments marketed by the brand, which include integrated compartments. The company promises the assurance of never losing your accessory, and of guaranteeing better performance.
Everything for muscle
To differentiate itself from the competition, Whoop explains that it does not measure “that data has a scientifically proven significant impact on your physical and mental health“. So no more superfluous data, the device focuses its action on health data, with a precision of “over 99% for heart rate and HRV tracking and benchmark sleep tracking“. It will also be able to provide some more specific advice from the smartphone screen, suggesting more suitable bedtimes and sleep times.
Thanks to sleep data in particular, the bracelet is responsible for establishing a recovery score each dayin order to determine a daily effort objective between 0 and 21, adapted to your capacity and your form for the day. The score is intended to be exhaustive, since it intends to take into account “both cardiovascular and muscular load, which can be impacted by sports, work, anxiety, shopping, and caring for children“.
Not really perfect
Another particularity of the Whoop: it is guaranteed for lifeprovided you subscribe to a monthly subscription to 30€ per month (264€ for one year, or 44€ for two years). Concretely, the device requires a premium subscription to operate. However, it is possible to test it for free for one month, which then allows you to return it or subscribe to a paid plan.
Another problem recorded by the American press: the bracelet would be far from being infallible, with visibly incorrect recorded dataand poorly recorded training sessions. Also, it is made of fabric, and takes a long time to dry. Not really ideal for a device intended for athletes. The absence of a screen also sometimes poses a problem, such as when the user wants to check data from their screen, or take a heart measurement in a hurry.
