With each new Marvel series that lands on Disney+, fans want to believe that this time: it’s the right one. This wish has unfortunately been granted too few times, but with Wonder Manwe really want to believe it. Since its first teasers, the new television project from Maison des Idées exudes freshness and renewal. By taking oneself too seriously, or sometimes not enough (yes Thor : Love and Thunderit’s you we’re talking about) the studio is trying out a new genre of production. Halfway between the initiatory story and the comedy (without reproducing the tone used in She Hulk) Wonder Man tells us the story of a certain Simon Williams who, despite his superpowers, seeks to become a Hollywood star.
And that’s when the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself to him. When an Oscar-winning director seeks a reboot Wonder Manthe superhero movie of his childhood, Simon knows he must do anything to get the role…even if it means breaking a few rules by lying about his identity. Since casting is prohibited to individuals with enhanced abilities or powers, the poor protagonist will find himself juggling between his lives as a star and a superhero: which is no picnic.

An unexpected approach to the genre to break the Marvel curse
With Wonder Manthe studio’s ambition is clear: this series must put an end to the decline of Marvel productions. This objective is far from being hidden, since it is a story element also highlighted in the series, as the latest trailer shows us. “He’s Von Kovak. A director looking to end the decline of superhero films” can we read in the extracts broadcast last weekend. You don’t have to be an expert to see this as a clever nod to the studio’s recent difficult years.
But will playing it meta be enough to make a clean sweep of the past? For that, you will have to wait to discover the series when all eight episodes will land on the same day, starting January 28. For now, the new passages shown in the trailer reinforce the good impressions we had until now. The series promises to offer a perfect blend of comedy, drama and action. Because as the description of the trailer suggests, even if Simon tries as best he can to hide his powers, “in the spotlight, nothing remains hidden…“
