You probably know your 6-digit PIN code which is something we all use regularly, whether we’re shopping online or filling out forms. But now, there’s a newer and smarter way to share your address. It’s called DIGIPIN, and it’s here to make things a lot easier.
So, what is DIGIPIN? It stands for Digital Postal Index Number. India Post has introduced this system to give every home, office, or building its own unique 10-character code. What’s special about it? Well, it’s based on your exact location using GPS coordinates.
Unlike regular PIN codes, which often cover a large area or even multiple neighbourhoods, DIGIPIN is super precise. It can point to your exact spot—within just a few metres!
How is DIGIPIN different from PINCODE?
Let’s be honest—traditional PIN codes often don’t cut it. They’re broad, confusing, and can lead to missed deliveries or wrong turns, especially in places with similar-sounding names. DIGIPIN is specific to your exact spot, not just your neighbourhood. It helps delivery people, emergency responders, and services find you faster and it works even in places with unstructured addresses—like rural areas or new housing colonies. Plus, you don’t need to worry about privacy—it doesn’t store your personal details.
How to Get Your Own DIGIPIN
Want to get your DIGIPIN? Just follow these steps:
- First of all, go to the official DIGIPIN portal: https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home
- You can either allow the site to use your current location or search for your address manually.
- The system will generate a unique 10-character code for your exact location.
- That’s it—you’re done! You can now use your DIGIPIN for deliveries, online shopping, address verification, and even in emergency situations.
Will This Replace My Current Address?
Not really. You’ll still have your postal address, but DIGIPIN acts as an extra layer of accuracy. Think of it as a digital shortcut to your exact doorstep. And as more services start using it, like e-commerce platforms and government apps, you might find that just sharing your DIGIPIN is enough
