If you see a car with pink plates anytime soon, these have a very specific meaning. The 40 Million Motorists association has just lifted the veil on this initiative which should be validated in the first quarter of 2026. A color revolution which in reality hides a serious administrative problem.
Enough to easily spot cars that are not necessarily in compliance
More than 460,000 vehicles are currently driving in France with WW plates. These temporary registrations allow new or imported cars to circulate for four to six months, while they obtain their definitive registration document. The problem? No one can visually check whether these plates are still valid.
The current system is too similar to classic plates and some motorists continue to drive long after their authorization has expired, sometimes without even knowing it. Law enforcement has difficulty distinguishing legal plates from illegal ones during road checks.
When plates are recycled too quickly
The situation becomes complicated with a technical detail that turns into a headache. Limited WW suits availablethe system reassigns the same numbers every 14 months on average. Pierre Chasseray, general delegate of 40 Million Motorists, denounces this vicious circle which leads to errors. Some respectful drivers receive fines intended for others. Philippe Nozière, president of the association, condemns the situation: “ Some law-abiding motorists find themselves paying a high Price for others who drive illegally. »
The Senate has officially taken up the subject. Hugues Saury, senator from Loiret, tabled a parliamentary question at the beginning of October, warning of the difficulties of the current system. The Ministry of the Interior has yet to respond, but the measure is part of the modernization of the registration system started in 2021.
Pink, a strategic choice

Why pink? This is not to remind you of the color of the license, but rather because no European country uses this color for its plates. Impossible to confuse with a foreign or definitive registration. New plates will also display their expiry dateallowing instant visual control.
Who will ride in pink?
These plates concern exclusively vehicles awaiting final registration. We are talking about new cars leaving the factory, vehicles imported from abroad or even incomplete models intended for bodywork.. Motorists will not have to pay anything extra, the color change will not generate any additional costs.
The file is progressing well on the institutional side. The proposal has already been presented and is heading straight towards official validation during the first quarter of 2026. The Senate is closely monitoring this reform, aware of the current dysfunctions which sometimes paralyze the market for imported vehicles. The ball is now in the court of the Ministry of the Interior, which must make a definitive decision. All the signals are green to see these famous pink plates land on our roads next year.
