If Arles has only 50,000 inhabitants, it can however boast of holding a very specific record: that of the largest city in France. The city of the Bouches du Rhône occupies no less than 758.9km², which allows it to tickle its American rival New York City (783.8 km²).
On the official website of the city, we learn that the “population is divided between the central agglomeration and eleven villages, the furthest of which is nearly 40 km from the city center ”. Our colleagues from Figaro Add that it takes almost an hour by road to reach the wild beaches (Piedmanson) since the emblematic amphitheater of the Arles city center. Note that the Camargue is officially part of Arles, which also explains the gigantic extent of the city.

The top 3 of the largest cities
Behind Arles, there are two other fairly unexpected municipalities: Valenis in Savoie as well as Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Large agglomerations are far from reaching these figures. For example, Paris is only 105 km² (intramural) while Marseille measures 240 km². In the end, Paris is therefore almost 7 times smaller than Arles, while it has more than 2 million inhabitants in intramural.
But beware, Arles is officially only the largest city in metropolis. It is in Guyana that we have the largest commune in France: Maripasoula measures no less than 18,360 km². It represents 1.5 times the size of the island of France. It represents around 25% of all Guyana territory.
Note all the same that in population, there, it is Paris who is in the lead, with around 2.1 million intramural inhabitants (not to mention the suburbs). It remains the most populated, even if the Parisian metropolis extends far beyond.
