There’s something very Goldilocks and the Three Bears about the new Cambridge Audio L/R Series of powered speakers, which have just been revealed at CES in Las Vegas. Available in three different sizes – L/R X, L/R M, and L/R S – there’s sure to be one that’s “just right” for you.
Let’s start with the Daddy Bear of the range. With 800 watts of Class D amplification onboard, plus dual 5in woofers, a pair of 6in passive radiators and a 28mm tweeter, the L/R X ($2299/£1799) have the kind of oomph that could wake a bear from hibernation. To keep all that power under control and ensure things sound great at all volumes, there’s also 64-bit audio processing and Cambridge’s DynamEQ tech.
The Mummy Bear in this family is the slightly more compact L/R M ($1599/£1199). You get the same size tweeters inside but slightly smaller 4in woofers and 4.75in radiators, which means slightly less power to play with, although 300 watts is still plenty for most people/bears. DynamEQ and 64-bit processing are also in play here.
Both sets of speakers have the same Wi-Fi connectivity with Cambridge Audio’s StreamMagic Gen 4 tech, which means support for Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and some other streaming services nobody uses, while Google Cast and AirPlay 2 mean they can be part of your similarly equipped multiroom setup. There’s also a moving magnet phono stage for hooking up a turntable, and HDMI eARC for connecting your TV.
Finally, Baby Bear’s more compact L/R S ($549/£399) only have aptX HD Bluetooth, 3in woofers and 0.8in tweeters, but with 100 watts of power on offer they’d still go loud enough to stop Goldilocks falling asleep and getting busted by three hungry grizzlies.
All three sets of Cambridge Audio L/R Series speakers have subwoofer outputs and come in black, white, orange, blue, green, and real walnut, but only the two larger pairs offer LED underlighting with controls for warmth and brightness.
The Cambridge Audio L/R S will be available in the spring, with the L/R M and L/R X to follow in the summer.
