The journey continues for Silo on Apple TV+. After a successful first season, the series led by Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins and Common is once again tackling the book it is adapting. Juliette Nichols is outside and her disappearance causes a wind of revolt to blow through the deepest floors of the immense underground structure. The series managed to go beyond the discovery of its main mystery, the reality of the outside world, thanks to a number of captivating parallel plots. One of them concerns the famous “Syndrome” which particularly affects Sheriff Billings. This strange illness could have a crucial impact on what happens next.
Invention of creator Graham Yost, the Syndrome was already mentioned in the previous season. During a confrontation between Juliette and her assistant, it is revealed that the latter is affected. He has many symptoms, tremors and muscle pain. According to information shared by the authorities, these are the first signs before the infection no longer affects only motor skills, but also cognitive functions. For this reason, those affected cannot hold positions of responsibility. That’s why Billings keeps it a secret. Now that he has been promoted to Sheriff, he could go a long way to thwarting the plans of Bernard and Sims, who still work closely with the head of law enforcement.
But where does the Syndrome come from?
The origins of this disease remain a mystery, although everything indicates that it is not a hereditary or contagious disease. Billings’ child shows no signs, just like his wife or everyone he meets on a daily basis. Asked about the question, creator Graham Yost explains that he came up with the idea while looking for a way to demonstrate that humanity is not made to live in confinement. It was during a conversation with the author of the novels that the Syndrome was born. “It’s the neuralgic response to the pressure of living in these conditions.” The biological hypothesis, formulated by many spectators, would therefore not be valid.
Why will this be crucial for the future?
The series has not yet revealed the concrete developments of the disease, or even whether it is incurable. What we do know, however, is that Bernard and his henchmen fear her. Because if it is indeed the materialization of the anxiety of confinement, Juliette’s departure could greatly increase the number of cases. While some of the residents are now convinced that she has survived, many will dream of setting foot on the ground outside. The survival of the Silo hangs by a thread, the spread of this affection could be the spark that lights the fuse. The first episode of season 2 what happens to communities that rebel, the Silo 18 could be next on the list. Silo is broadcast weekly on Apple TV+ on Fridays. Ten episodes are on the program for this new round.
