With the launch of Imagen 3, Google is opening the doors to AI image creation on mobile and the web. Available for free on the Gemini platform at this address, the generator creates images in response to users’ text descriptions.
Limited free use
There is, however, a limit if you want to generate images with people: it is necessary to subscribe to the Gemini Advanced offer, an option integrated into the Google One AI Premium plan billed at €21.99 per month. It also includes expanded storage on Google One (2TB) and premium AI features in Google Docs.
Compared to previous versions, Imagen 3 offers superior image quality, with sharper details, vibrant colors and a notable reduction in visual imperfections. The tool offers a multitude of visual styles, which makes it possible to generate realistic landscapes as well as “claymation”-style scenes or oil paintings.
Google also highlights improvements in rendering text embedded in images, a significant challenge for AI image generators. So, when a user requests a comic book illustration with a speech bubble, the text must be readable and consistent with the requested style… even if certain imperfections remain in this area.
Imagen 3 was evaluated by Google DeepMind in comparison with other image generation AI models, such as DALL-E 3, Midjourney v6 and Stable Diffusion XL 1.0. The results show that Imagen 3 stands out for its ability to produce images that better meet user expectations, whether for the precision of details or for the variety of styles offered.
Among the key features, the platform allows continuous image customization. Unlike some generators which create several variations by default, Imagen generates a single image per description, then letting the user refine the result as they wish. Each new request generates a new image based on the modifications made, a way of offering a more interactive and flexible experience in order to adjust the visual elements based on user feedback.
Users can download the produced images in high resolution (2048 X 2048 pixels), with no daily limit for downloads, as long as they comply with restrictions regarding the depiction of people. Furthermore, all images, even on the free plan, can be stored, shared, or even integrated into Google Docs and Gmail.
