The latest figures for the video game industry have just been released and today we learn that the Minecraft phenomenon has exceeded the symbolic bar of 300 million games sold across the world since its release in 2011, 13 years ago. Mojang title exceeds Grand Theft Auto Vthe game from Rockstar Games which culminates in more than 200 million games sold.
Minecraft is the best-selling video game in history
With more than 300 million games sold, Minecraft is now the best-selling video game (and not video game license) in the history of gaming. A great feat that the game owes to its longevity. In fact, the title came out originally on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2011before being carried on all possible and imaginable supports : PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Switch, in virtual reality, on mobile and of course on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The game (not recommended for children under 7 years old) is very general audience and offers almost infinite freedom, allowing you to evolve, create and imagine adventures in a gigantic open-world sandbox where you have the power to build or deconstruct anything you want. In addition to this, Minecraft had the right with several DLCsallowing you to add content and boost sales.
It is no real surprise that the title reached crazy figures, in particular thanks to the mobile versions (counted at around 300 million) offered at a much more affordable Price (7.99 euros).
Just behind Minecraftwe find GTA V which culminates at approximately 202 million copies sold since its release in September 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360. This is also a great achievement for the game from Rockstar Games. Contrary to Minecraft, GTA V is a game not recommended for under 18s, sold at full price. Although the title had the right at many portages (on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S), there was no mobile version. GTA V did not have the right to any DLC neither.
The longevity of the title is mainly due to GTA Onlinethe online service of GTA V which still brings together today several million players every week. Since October 2013, GTA Online has had the right to around fifty free updates allowing you to add content to the game.
