If you are struggling to solve today’s problems Word puzzle, don’t despair: even the inventor of the game often needs several tries to guess the right word.
“(My partner) and I play it together on the couch every morning,” said New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle Newsweek in January 2022. “She consistently gets it in three tries, which is much, much better than I can ever hope to achieve. It usually takes me at least four or five tries.”
Years after coming up with the original concept, Welsh-born Wardle perfected it Word during the COVID-19 lockdowns before being released to the public in October 2021.
Word exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times bought it shortly afterwards for an undisclosed seven-figure sum and it became the outlet’s most popular game.
For the uninitiated, Word players are given six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Gray tiles behind a letter indicate that it does not appear in the word at all; yellow means the letter is present, but in the wrong position; while green lets players know that the letter is in the word and in the correct place.
Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics who teaches at the University of Reading in Britain, previously provided useful advice for Word players in an interview with Newsweek.
“One thing I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “It can be helpful to start with words that contain common vowels, for example e and a, and consonants such as r and t.
“For example, choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or eliminate that they might think.”
