For this week’s topic, we’re talking about something that seems to be looming closer and closer: fully autonomous self-driving cars.
This Week’s Poll Results (HackerNoon)
Would You Ride in A Self-Driving Car?
Tesla is starting trials on their robotaxi service, and Waymo continues to open up its services to more cities. So, we want to know if you would ride one of these autonomous cars.
A whopping 51% of people said they would ride in a self-driving car. 25% said they were open to the possibility in the future, just not any time soon. However, 18% were adamant that they would absolutely not ride in one.
Some in the comments took this time to tease the naysayers and the pessimists.
Others lamented that self-driving cars were actually safer than when a human is behind the wheel.
I mean, their accident rate is lower than human drivers already…
Somebody tacked on to this idea by saying:
Drinking and driving accidents to become obsolete!
And finally, some imagined what the future would look like and how self-driving cars would shape the laws of our society:
I feel like it’s going to get to a point like the movie IRobot where all the cars are driving themselves, talking to each other and it will become illegal to manually drive your own vehicle.
From the way the comment section and the voting swayed, it seems as if most people are ready and excited for the possibility of fully self-driving cars. Some see this as just the inevitable next step in transportation, and others see this as the safest way to use cars.
However, this begs the question: Does the rest of the internet feel the same way? Let’s find out.
