Your old Disney tapes might be worth a fortune!

Launched at the end of 2019 in the United States, then a few months later in France, Disney+ has largely taken over our consumption habits. More generally, the entire film industry has been rethought since the advent of the giant Netflix. SVOD has largely replaced physical media, to the point that Blu-Ray and DVD are now reserved for cinema enthusiasts only. However, all is not lost for early collectors: the physical, and more particularly VHS tapes are still popularand can be resold for a very high Price, as our colleagues reported recently from AlloCiné.

From the improbable nonsense now impossible to find on the Internet, to the blockbusters of the 1980s and 1990s, VHS are no longer reserved only for second-hand dealers. Last year, the site MIC estimated that on eBay, sales of magnetic tape cassettes reportedly increased steadily since 2016, at a rate of 5% per year. Conversely, DVD and Blu-Ray sales have been in free fall for several years already.

Nothing very surprising in the end: more and more public or private organizations are relying on VHS to preserve a physical testimony of certain old cinematographic productions. Many having escaped dematerialization, they now find themselves disappearing, which makes them all the more rare and precious. Already in 2015, Yale University got its hands on a stock of 2,700 VHS tapes dating from the 70s and 80s.

Disney rafle la mise

However, it is not the rarest films that sell for the most money. In May 2020, the Sun revealed that in terms of the biggest VHS sales, Walt Disney productions were clearly the winners. Count on more than €8,000 for Beauty and the Beast, and up to €14,000 for a copy of Mulan dating from 1999. In addition to being obviously very popular with the general public, these animated films have one thing in common: they belong to the Black Diamonds collection, which Disney only published between 1984 and 1993. Rare media therefore, which partly explains their crazy price.

You will have understood, before throwing away your old Disney cassettes, first check that they are not stamped with the logo Black Diamond on the edge. Otherwise, you will have to lower your prices, at the rate of a few euros per VHS on online resale sites.
