Malwarebytes reports this in a blog post. Fraudulent websites are springing up like mushrooms that supposedly offer what many people currently want: a way to play “GTA 6” before it is officially released. They lure victims with pithy slogans like “Get GTA 6 before anyone else” or “Buy VIP early access” (“Get GTA 6 before everyone else“, „Buy VIP early accessAll you have to do is pay a few hundred US dollars in cryptocurrencies, enter a payment code and finally unlock the game.

The virus analysts explain that any website claiming to sell early access to “GTA 6” has not been authorized by Rockstar Games and should be considered fraudulent until Rockstar announces access options through official channels. Otherwise, victims pay and receive nothing in return – and because it involves cryptocurrencies, there is usually no way to get the money back.
The games in the “Grand Theft Auto” series are very popular and are one of the largest franchises ever. “GTA 5” from 2013 was purchased more than 225 million times. Stirring up hype, for example by announcing the sales price five months before the actual launch and by pre-ordering starting today – in Europe the copy will cost 80 euros – is now also attracting criminals.
