Smartphones are far from reaching the peak of their development. There is room for improvement in charging and battery technology, for example. But the three established manufacturers Apple, Google and Samsung rely on evolution rather than revolution. The Chinese manufacturers Honor, Oppo and Xiaomi show that there is another way. Their new smartphones have battery capacities of 6,000 to 7,500 mAh and therefore unimagined runtimes – for example with over 30 hours of video playback. If you do run out of juice, some models charge faster wirelessly than others via cable. Steffen Herget explains these and other technical innovations in the current issue of c’t uplink.

In addition to the battery, high-end smartphones from China are also making significant progress in terms of photo quality. We talk about which techniques Xiaomi now uses to take equally good photos in the dark, how the previously excellent night mode of Google’s Pixel smartphones works and what the hardware partnerships with Hasselblad and Leica bring. But other manufacturers are not idle either: Google integrates more AI into its Pixel phones than anyone else, while Samsung is bringing a highlight onto the market with the Privacy Display: a special pixel matrix makes it possible to protect the entire image content or individual areas from prying eyes from the side at the touch of a finger.
