100W charging capable Android phones are coming – without a catch

Xiaomi has confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 series will be the first Android flagships to support 100W USB PD PPS charging fully.

The company even teased the update on Weibo, making it clear you won’t need proprietary bricks or cables to reach peak speeds.

Until now, most Android manufacturers have locked very fasr charging behind brand-specific chargers.

Previous Xiaomi models like the Xiaomi 15 Pro could manage 90W with HyperCharge, yet fell back to under 30W on regular USB PD. With the 17 series, Xiaomi says you’ll get full-speed charging on any compatible 100W PPS charger and cable.

The company claims a full charge in about 40 minutes. That figure becomes more striking when paired with the expected bump in battery capacity: rumours suggest 7,000mAh for the base Xiaomi 17, 6,300mAh for the 17 Pro, and up to 7,500mAh for the Pro Max; all juiced at universal 100W.

Pressure on the competition

Universal standards like USB PD were supposed to simplify charging, but many Chinese brands leaned into proprietary solutions to stand out. Xiaomi shifting back to standards could pressure rivals like OPPO, vivo and OnePlus to follow suit.

More importantly, it challenges the bigger names. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 still tops out at 45W with PD PPS, and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro XL manages 37W at best. Apple’s iPhones are slower still. If Xiaomi proves 100W universal charging works consistently, those limitations will look increasingly outdated.

Launch and availability

The Xiaomi 17 series officially launches in China on September 25, 2025, with international availability expected soon after. By skipping the “16” branding entirely, Xiaomi is making a statement, and it might just be that universal fast charging is the future.

Proprietary fast charging has always felt like an unnecessary hurdle. If Xiaomi delivers true 100W speeds on universal USB PD PPS, it could force the industry’s hand and finally give users the flexibility they’ve been waiting for.
