The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NSA) has announced recalls affecting a total of more than 166,200 Mazda vehicles.
The problems range from loss of drive power to the engine not starting after an automatic engine stop.
Problem with Dash electrical power unit
Mazda recalled nearly 81,000 vehicles because the defrost, seat belt warning, 306-degree view monitor and PHEV high-voltage battery cooling system did not function properly when drivers started the car. It all comes down to the Dash Electrical Supply Unit in some 2024-2025 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 vehicles, according to the NHTSA.
Dealers will update the Dash ESU software to resolve the issue. Mazda’s internal recall number for this problem is 7124J.
Problems with the powertrain and engine control module
Another 31,488 vehicles were recalled due to a problem with the software that controls the powertrain control module and engine control modules. The indicator lights can come on and cause the vehicle to lose propulsion, the NHTSA said. This recall involves approximately 2024 CX-90 vehicles and 2025 CX-70 vehicles.
Dealers can reprogram the PCM and ECM software for free.
Mazda’s recall number for this problem is 7024J.
The engine may not restart
The next recall involves 38,926 Mazda 2024 CX-90 vehicles. The engine may not restart after the idle stop feature is enabled due to a software problem, the NHTSA said.
Dealers will reprogram the PCM software and the battery energy control module software free of charge. Mazda’s recall number for this problem is also 7024J.
Loss of propulsion power in EV mode
The latest recall affects 14,902 vehicles due to an issue with the inverter software, which can cause the malfunction indicator lights to illuminate and cause the vehicle to lose power while driving in EV mode. The recall affects some 2024 and 2025 CX-90 and CX-70 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the NHTSA said.
Dealers will install new inverter software for free. Mazda’s internal recall number is also 7024J.
For all recalls, owners will receive letters in the mail after December 30 alerting them to the problems with their vehicles. You can also call Mazda directly at 1-800-222-5500 and select option 6
