3 new to Prime Video movies you need to stream this weekend (Jan. 16-18)

The weekends are made for streaming movies, and Prime Video is always one of the first streaming services I turn to when I’m putting together my weekend watchlist.

While the Amazon-owned platform hasn’t added any new movies in the last few days apart from the poorly received 2025 “Smurfs” movie (which, by most accounts, is a skip), there’s still plenty of great picks that have arrived on the streamer this month. There’s something for all tastes in my picks, from a farcical comedy about a teddy bear come to life, to a historical drama that features an Oscar-nominated performance, and a very important message.

Whatever your preferred movie genre, there’s likely something on Prime Video that will appeal to you, and below I’ve picked the three movies I’ll be watching this weekend.

‘Ted’ (2012)

Peacock just released the first trailer for “Ted” season 2 this week, ahead of its March 5 premiere, so now is a great time to enjoy the original movie that inspired the fan-favorite prequel show.

From “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, “Ted” is a crude and irreverent comedy that fans of the adult animated juggernaut will love. It’s packed with toilet-humor, and while it strays into mean-spirited jabs on occasion, it’s also got plenty of excellent gags that still get me laughing even though I’ve seen “Ted” a handful of times.

The flick revolves around John (Mark Wahlberg) and Ted (voiced by MacFarlane), a teddy bear come to life thanks to the power of a shooting star. John is now in his 30s, and Ted has become a slacker who does little but get high and watch reruns of “Flash Gordon.” When John’s long-suffering girlfriend (Mia Kunis) demands he grow up, Ted struggles to adapt to the changes in his best friend. The sequel, “Ted 2,” is also now streaming on Prime Video, and the two “Ted” movies make for a great comedy double bill.

‘Meg 2: The Trench’ (2023)

If you’re looking for dumb thrills this weekend, “Meg 2: The Trench” delivers. This sci-fi action-blockbuster sequel is the type of movie that requires you to switch your brain off, and certainly could be torn apart for its weak plotting and cheesy dialogue. Set your expectations accordingly, and there’s definitely fun to be had in watching Jason Statham square off against an oversized, prehistoric apex predator. The first “Meg” movie succeeds on the simple hook of Statham vs shark, and this sequel certainly offers more of the same.

Set five years after the events of the first “The Meg,” Jonas Taylor (Statham) is a single father, raising his teenage daughter following the death of his wife. He’s also helping to thwart environmental crimes and assisting a company in exploring the Mariana Trench. When a sinister (illegal) mining operation threatens the mission, it bubbles into a full-blown battle for survival against both human threats and, of course, some colossal sharks. “Meg 2: The Trench” offers blockbuster excitement, so long as you can forgive its many flaws.

‘Loving’ (2016)

Watch On

If you’re looking for a Prime Video watch this weekend of true quality, then look no further than “Loving.” This 2016 historic drama is tender and tear-jerking, and it’s based on a true story. It chronicles an important moment in U.S. history, and earned a deserved 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, with particular praise dished out for its two leads, Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. Its themes of societal prejudice and fighting for what you believe resonate in our modern world, which prevents its 20th century setting from feeling dated.

Opening in 1958, Richard (Edgerton) and Mildred (Negga) are a loving husband and wife, no different from any other. However, as an interracial couple, they face discrimination due to the attitudes of the era. Thrown in jail for violating Virginia’s laws that prohibited interracial marriages, they refuse to accept the world as it is and instead fight for love and for equality, taking the battle for their marriage to be officially recognized all the way to the Supreme Court. Triumphant in tone, “Loving” doesn’t leave a dry eye in the house.
