September is a big month for indie games, especially if you’ve been waiting for a certain “most awaited sequel of all time” to arrive. We’ve also got roguelikes and slick action galore, plus an increasingly popular co-operative adventure that you and your friends are going to love.

Here are How-To Geek’s indie game picks for September 2025.

VOID/BREAKER

VOID/BREAKER is a challenging first-person roguelite shooter where your goal is to escape an endless cycle of violence at the hands of the hostile AI who is keeping you prisoner. This adversary will do everything it can to prevent your escape, sending all manner of robotic enemies your way. How you deal with these threats largely depends on how good you are at combining the tools you have at your disposal.

Chief among them is a deep gun modding system, in which you can combine modifications to make entirely unique weapons. The more you play, the more mods you unlock, and the more combinations you can put to the test on future runs. The good news here is that the shooting feels slick and precise and, combined with a fast-paced movement system, makes you feel like you’re in control at all times (even when you’re turned to paste by a killer robot).

On top of this solid foundation, the game features a truly modern destruction system that invites you to tear down the walls around you in pursuit of your goal. Not only does it look great and feel satisfying to bury your enemies in piles of rubble, but it also works in synergy with the gunplay to create a frenetic yet gratifying gameplay loop. Use this to create new paths through levels and stagger or defeat enemies wherever you can.

VOID/BREAKER is currently in early access, with a full release coming later in 2025. Despite being in an unfinished state, the game is already surprisingly polished. This is an Unreal Engine 5 game that, based on anecdotal user reviews, seems to run well across the board. What makes this particularly impressive is the fact that it’s the passion project of a single developer.

I Am Your Beast

From the developer of El Paso, Elsewhere comes I Am Your Beast, a stylish first-person action game that puts you in the shoes of a deadly secret agent. The game chains together a series of sandbox levels, where the aim is to use anything and everything you can get your hands on to defeat the Covert Operations Initiative (COI) in a fast-paced and unpredictable fight to the death.

It’s like Superhot, Neon White, and Madjack Mullet had a cel-shaded baby, with more than 20 levels to explore and perfect. You can choose your own level of engagement here. Master each set-piece and swiftly move on to the next, soaking up the full-voiced story and cutscenes in between, or let the game get under your skin and rinse-repeat to experiment with strategy in the ultimate pursuit of the fastest time and S-rank.

Ammo is limited, so while you’ll be doing a fair amount of shooting, you’ll also be hurling guns at your opponents, dropping in from above, triggering environmental hazards, and using your bare hands to perform acts of exaggerated comic book violence against your foes. The adrenaline-pumping action is accompanied by a fierce soundtrack from composer RJ Lake, who also composed for El Paso, Elsewhere.

I Am Your Beast was released a year ago on Steam for PC, with console releases arriving mid-2025. The reason it’s captured my attention now is that the game just resurfaced on Game Pass for Xbox and Windows, so it’s a great time to check it out if you missed it the first time around.

PEAK

PEAK is a cooperative climbing game that can be played solo or with three other friends. The aim is simple: ascend the mountain, help each other out, and ideally don’t fall to your death. Though the game has been out since June, PEAK has really taken off over the course of the last few months, with the number of concurrent players on Steam steadily growing (with an all-time high of more than 170,000).

This is a highly social experience, which has led to the game becoming something of a magnet for streamers. The game heavily rewards working together, as you can literally lift your friends to safety or venture ahead to place ropes and spikes that will aid them in getting up the mountain behind you. There’s also a survival aspect to the game since you’ll need to fuel your adventure and treat or manage any injuries you pick up along the way.

The other aspect of survival is dealing with the perils that await you in any of the game’s four biomes. Different zones have different obstacles that you’ll need to overcome, and working together is key to success. In order to keep you coming back, _PEAK_’s map rotates every day, so you have a new adventure waiting for you whenever you log on.

The multiplayer aspect is designed strictly for playing with friends, with no open matchmaking to prevent your adventure from being ruined by randoms. Find food along the way, make clever use of the tools available to you, and roast marshmallows around the virtual campfire with your best buddies. There’s also an opportunity to stamp your own mark by customizing your player.

PEAK is currently only available on Steam for PC (but it also happens to be Steam Deck verified, which is nice).

Mortal Sin

Mortal Sin is a first-person melee roguelike that finally left early access on August 30, 2025. The emphasis here is on visceral combat that will have you painting the hallways red as you hack, slash, bash, and dodge your way through a procedurally-generated and endlessly replayable adventure. Chain together combos in order to defeat the most metal of enemies and never stop moving.

If the medieval-themed ultraviolence doesn’t get you, the variety on offer here will. There’s a broad range of classes to experiment with, each with unique abilities and an arsenal of weapons to wield, from two-handed greatswords and mallets to ranged spears and guns, and even magical spells. While the game generates new dungeons to keep things feeling fresh, these are pulled from a library of hand-crafted rooms.

The visuals are unashamedly old-school, with unique customization options that allow you to tune the look to your liking via a series of sliders. As you progress, you’ll unlock more classes to play, which will force you to adapt your play style to succeed.

Though Mortal Sin has left early access, the developer has noted that future updates are planned. The game is currently only available on PC via Steam.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Eight years passed between the release of the original Hollow Knight and its long-awaited sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong, but the time is finally here. The game arrived with a bang on September 4, 2025, and has since torn up the Steam charts. At the time of writing, it’s currently the third most-played game on the platform, with an all-time peak of more than 535,000 players (numbers which will probably be out of date by the time you read this). Both Steam and the Nintendo eShop suffered Silksong-related outages, with more than 100,000 players jumping in on Steam within 45 minutes of release.

Silksong follows in the footsteps of the original game, a heavily stylized Metroidvania experience that rocketed its developer Team Cherry to stardom. This time around, you play Hornet, a returning character from the first game known as the princess knight and protector of Hallownest ruins. Though Silksong was initially meant to be downloadable content for the original, the scope of Hornet’s adventure quickly grew beyond the scope of a mere add-on.

Hollow Knight became known for its challenging yet satisfying combat, rewarding exploration, and is even credited with helping Nintendo’s Switch earn its reputation as a home for all things indie. Silksong follows in the same footsteps, with the exciting new kingdom of Pharloom at your fingertips. Combat has been refined, there are more weapons and mechanisms to uncover and craft, plus the game features more than 200 enemies to encounter and 40 bosses to defeat.

Team Cherry clearly put a lot of love into this, with side content to discover in the form of quests, and a no-holds-barred orchestral score that’s worthy of the franchise’s reputation. While no critics’ reviews have been released as of writing (the developers apparently didn’t want critics playing before backers or fans), early Steam reviews are looking good. But then what did you expect from the most-wishlisted game of all time?

The cherry on the cake (sorry) is the fact that Silksong launched for just $20 on all platforms, which includes PC, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series consoles. If that’s not enough, the game also launched day one on Game Pass.
