Imagine that you had the opportunity to create a project in collaboration with the most prominent companies in artificial intelligence (AI) of the planet. And, as if that weren’t enough, you also had a huge amount of money to drive it. This is what the United States is apparently doing.
This Wednesday what they called the Stargate project was announced. This is an initiative led by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, which aims to invest $500 billion over the next four years to build new AI infrastructure for OpenAI within the North American country.
It’s not just about OpenAI, but also about other companies
The proposal is already underway, with $100 billion flowing for the first stages to begin to materialize. Stargate is part of the Donald Trump administration’s strategy to “Ensure American leadership in AI”. It promises to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and help in the task of “reindustrialization” of the country.
According to official information distributed through various communications, Stargate also aims to provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of the United States and its allies. The plan, as we can see, is very ambitious, and we will have to see if it manages to achieve its objectives. Here are other details.
In addition to SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX are the other initial financial backers. They will also be involved in the project as technological partners as important as Arm, Microsoft y NVIDIA. OpenAI will assume the role of operational manager, while SoftBank will be financially responsible.
Stargate seems to be going from strength to strength. There is already work underway in Texas. However, this will not be the only location. Project managers are evaluating other sites to develop the campus. Other companies are also expected to join the project, either as investors or as technological partners.
The news comes on the heels of Trump revoking Joe Biden’s executive order on AI safety. If we take both advertisements into account, we could say that The United States is moving further and further away from Europe in two senses: less regulation, although this may not always be positive, and more investment.
