A reward that arrives this weekend in the form of a third season in record time: just seven months after the premiere of the second and after having waited for three years between the first and the second. Devotees of this mix of horror, drama and action with an unmistakably Korean stamp are in luck: ‘Sweet Home’ returns to Netflix.
Originally released in 2020, the first season of ‘Sweet Home’ was welcomed with open arms by fans, thanks to its bloody and hard-hitting a mix of genres and the stylistic nature of its visual narrativewhich sometimes made one think of a live-action anime. In fact, the series is based on a webtoon by Studio Dragon (‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’, ‘Doona!’, ‘Kyongsong’s Creature’, ‘The Queen of Tears’).
The story follows a lonely young man who moves into an apartment complex called Green Home after the tragic death of his entire family. Shortly after his arrival, a mysterious phenomenon begins to transform people into hideous monsters, each manifesting their darkest inner desires. The residents of Green Home must band together to survive and fight these creatures as they begin to receive clues about the origin of the epidemic.
Aside from the extraordinary horror and action sequences, this series stands out for its remarkable character construction, derived from the fight of all of them against their own monsters, which serves as a metaphor of the battle between each person and their darkest side. All of this is perfectly represented in the atmosphere of the building, which provides a unique atmosphere to an oppressive and psychologically very dark story.
