The U.S. Commerce Department plans to unveil proposed rules starting Monday that would ban Chinese- and Russian-made hardware and software for connected vehicles, people familiar with the matter said.
The trade body has been meeting with industry experts in recent months to address concerns about the safety of a new generation of so-called smart cars. The measure would include a ban on the use and testing of Chinese and Russian technology for automated driving systems and vehicle communication systems, the sources said. While the bans focus primarily on software, the proposed rules would also cover some hardware, the sources said.
