Galicia has a problem with wind projects. The development of new parks has been disputed for some time both by the neighbors on the field and by the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia. Meanwhile, the Xunta de Galicia is looking for creative solutions to convince its inhabitants. How to save them money.
Discount on the electricity bill. President Alfonso Rueda has announced the creation of a Galician Energy Marketer (RDG) to advance towards the energy transition, but also to face the growing rejection of wind farms.
For its part, the Conselleira has announced that the RDG will sell 100% of the energy to Galician consumers, both individuals and companies, and they will be able to benefit from an average discount of 50% on the market Price in case the neighbor lives nearby. of a renewable infrastructure.
The marketing company will be a mixed company through Resources of Galicia (RDG), which has the support of the European Commission. It will have 30% public capital and the remaining 70% will belong to associated companies such as Abanca, Finsa (wood industry), Megasa (metallurgy) or Grupo Nogar (port).
“A reality at the beginning of 2025”. This was expressed by the Galician President, who hopes to approve the 2025 budgets and bring this project before the Galician Chamber to begin processing it before the end of October. Currently, the context is marked by social rejection of wind farms, where the Superior Court of Xustiza of Galicia has also paralyzed 59 of a total of 64 requested projects.
The cars respond to demands from environmental and neighborhood groups. Different organizations and platforms have described the action as a “wind invasion” and that it “taxes the Castellana.” This manifests the discontent with wind turbines that generate a close impact (in their own municipality) but a distant return (energy for other urban centers). In addition, the increase in approved projects that do not comply with the established environmental parameters and that the Xunta aspires to correct this imbalance of having a wind farm without its benefits, which is why it wants to make it more tolerable with a discount on the electricity bill.
Domino effect. One of the problems that these situations raise for the State is the domino effect, as happened with the Maestrazgo. In Spain, what happens is that there is energy inequality (some produce, others consume) and the generating territories are receiving with skepticism or hostility the renewable energy projects in their territories, as the production goes to the big cities. In fact, in Aragon it has already been seen how the community wanted to keep its surplus energy against the principle of energy solidarity.
That a wind farm or a solar farm reduce the bill of the municipalities where they are installed, as Galicia intends, can serve as a solution to the reluctance of the neighbors. Although we will have to wait for the measure to be finalized to find out.
