The first trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake released in October 2022 clearly worried fans of the original work. Finally, despite some unappealing trailers shared by Konami in recent months, this new version of Silent Hill 2 designed by Bloober Team is a real success.
The remake combines tradition (the story remains unchanged, the multiple endings are there) and modernity. This desire to anchor yourself in the spirit of the times is felt thanks to the new shoulder-mounted camera popularized by Resident Evil 4. Masashi Tsuboyama, director of the original version of Silent Hill 2, gives his point of view on the new perspective given to the player in this remake.
The camera of the Silent Hill 2 remake pleases the director of the original game
Silent Hill 2 does not officially bear the term “remake” in its title, but we can only attest that the overhaul brought by Bloober Team is substantial. Beyond the graphics, another major change is obvious, namely the new shoulder-mounted camera. Goodbye to the still shots of the early 21st century version : the player places himself virtually just behind James Sunderland in this remake of Silent Hill 2. Masashi Tsuboyama, director of the original version, appreciates it.
« Changing the camera has a significant impact on many aspects, combat, level design, art creation, etc. Although the impact on the story is relatively small, it brings a big change to the feel of the game. The over-the-shoulder view undeniably adds to the realism », Rejoices the artistic director of Silent Hill 4.
Masashi Tsuboyama even goes so far as to confide that he doesn’t particularly like the fixed camera of “his” Silent Hill 2regretting the lack of depth of this perspective. A rather surprising testimony, knowing that this perspective is also part of the charm of Silent Hill of the time. Not controlling the camera and therefore not always seeing what was in front of you reinforced the tension.

About Silent Hill 2 remake🟥
Games and technology are constantly evolving, resulting in significant differences in constraints and levels of expression.
This is a common issue with media arts in general, but it is not easy to maintain and appreciate the environment of the time.— Yushi Tsuboyama/Masashi Tsuboyama (@tsuboyama2024) October 4, 2024
In any case, it was difficult for Bloober Team to opt for a camera other than the one placed just behind the character at a time when the big names in the genre, from Resident Evil to Alan Wake II, opt for this point of view. A profitable choice given the critical reception of Silent Hill 2.
Remember that the Konami title is released this October 8 on PC and PS5. If the story of survival horror intrigues you, but you don’t want to immerse yourself in the game, know that the next film Silent Hill by Christopher Gans will tell the story of James Sunderland in the heart of the foggy city.
