The Matter standard takes a qualitative leap with its version 1.4, incorporating new devices and improving interoperability between platforms, the great promise with which it arrived but which still had asterisks to resolve.
Why is it important. Two years after its launch, Matter is trying to solve the main frustrations of users and manufacturers. The key: a commitment to more fluid integration and greater scope towards home energy management.
The panoramic. Matter 1.4 involves three big changes:
- Improvement of the multi-admin system for a more fluid connection between different ecosystems.
- Native integration in routers.
- Support for energy management devices.
In detail. Improved multi-admin allows devices to automatically sync between platforms. If we allow it, a smart bulb configured in Apple’s HomeKit will automatically appear on Google Home or Alexa.
In fact, Amazon and Google have already confirmed their adoption of Matter 1.4, although without specifying specific dates yet. Amazon will update Echo and Eero devices in early 2025, the company told The Verge.
The new. Energy management takes on special prominence with Matter 1.4, as it incorporates…:
- heat pumps
- Electric heaters
- Energy storage systems
- Solar devices (inverters and panels)
- Hybrid solar/battery systems
turning point. Matter certified routers will act as hubgreatly simplifying the infrastructure necessary for the smart home. The specification also improves some existing features:
- More customizable motion sensors
- Programmable thermostats and preset modes
- Expanded Control Wall Switches
- Better battery management for wireless devices
In summary. One of the big improvements in Matter 1.4 may be in power management, as devices will now be able to adjust their startup times and switch between different power sources.
It is a great step towards the standardization of the connected home, although its success, as we have seen with similar steps in the past, will depend on the speed and breadth with which manufacturers and platforms adopt these developments.
