Imagine dining below sea level in a restaurant with a dome that allows you to observe everything that happens around you. Between bites, a clownfish or surgeonfish appears (like Dory from ‘Finding Nemo’). It is a truly unique environment, located on one of the 26 atolls of the Maldivesa place where marine nature and luxury merge to offer an experience that promises to delight more than the sense of taste.
We are talking about the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, the largest glass underwater restaurant in the world. It is a structure of about 400 tons and 90 square meters where diners taste a wide variety of dishes. Despite your title of being “the largest in the world” we will find only 10 tables 5.8 meters below the Hurawalhi Maldives, a tourist complex where the exclusivity of its proposal stands out.
A glass capsule for dining below sea level
As we can see in the images, everyone involved in the project (designers, architects, builders) did a very good job. Without necessarily being a minimalist spaceno element is left over and every corner seems to be perfectly thought out. If we start at the top we find some thin but resistant structural arches with a metallic finish that support the curved glass panels of the restaurant.
The “capsule” design is one of the distinctive elements of this place, as it provides one of the most immersive experiences. Other underwater restaurants, such as Under in Norway and Al Mahara in the United Arab Emirates, showcase marine nature through large windows. This is not to say that it is negative, but each alternative has its own advantages for visitors. Some are simply more immersive than others.
5.8 Undersea Restaurant also has other interesting details, such as a carpet that imitates water waves in blue tones, wooden baseboards that subtly contrast with the blue environment, and modern black furniture. The place is about 20 °C. An interesting point is that the restaurant owners suggest showing up with a smart-casual dress code, and You must remove your shoes before entering..
If we focus on the menu, which can be consulted in detail on the website, we find five-course menus for lunch and seven-course menus for dinner. In all cases there are vegan, seafood and meat options. The dishes reach the capsule via a small elevator from the kitchen located on the surface. Additionally, diners can choose from a wide variety of wines selected by a sommelier.
