In addition to the difficult comparison with the cinematographic saga, the new adaptation of the adventures of Harry Potter will have to tackle a problem of temporality. In 2023, when HBO and Warner Bros formalize a new adaptation of the literary saga, seven seasons are promised to spectators. Warner Bros. Discovery executives discuss a decade dedicated to the quest of the little wizard with glasses and his friends to defeat the one whose name must not be spoken. With one season per novel, one could expect that a few years would separate certain bursts of episodes. After all, series taking over the small screen each year at a regular pace are becoming increasingly rare.
While the identity of the new interpreters of the main characters remains secret, a question arises. Will this new series also be struck by the “syndrome Stranger Things” ? As a reminder, the main actors Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo were between 12 and 14 years old when the series launched on Netflix. This having accumulated delays, they must now camp 15-year-old teenagers even though they are between 20 and 23 years old. During a press conference, relayed by TV LineHBO boss Casey Bloys explains that this is one of the main concerns of creative teams. Recruited at the age of 12-13, the actors will theoretically be 23 years old when the trip ends.
No time turner for teams
“It’s something we’re thinking about. One of the ideas we talked about was shooting the first and second seasons on very close dates, because 11 to 13 is a big leap in kids’ lives. We can get away with 13 to 15 years, something like that. So we’re going to have to think about planning and filming in a way that they don’t grow too much between seasons. It’s a consideration”.
Concretely, this could involve filming several seasons one after the other, before giving the writers time to continue the journey once the actors are over 15 years old. This is probably why development takes longer than expected; we don’t make a series like we make a film. Each burst of episodes will surely correspond to about ten hoursa far cry from films not exceeding three hours at the cinema. Casey Bloys concedes that it will be a real headache. “I think an annual calendar will be difficult to establish, but it depends on what is written in advance.”
No faces for the heroes yet
The creation of a schedule adapted to time constraints is quite reassuring, but Max is also expected to turn the corner on other aspects. If the sets of the films should be reused – it is difficult to imagine a new model to illustrate the famous Hogwarts school – the series will have to be built around a completely new cast. While Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint only had to live up to the paper characters, their successors will have to bear comparison with the heroes who have marked generations of spectators. For now, a few names are circulating to represent the teachers guiding the students, but the identity of the children remains a mystery. Harry Potter, the series is promised to launch in 2026, in just under two years. We can hope for more information as this deadline approaches.
