“One for all, and all for one”. After Pathé, it is UGC’s turn to explore the imagination of the illustrious Alexandre Dumas. The cinema operator and distributor is joining forces, among others, with France 2 Cinema and Studio Canal to reinvent the adventures of D’Artagnan, Athos, Portos and Aramis. This time, the King’s Musketeers agree with the feminine to add a new dimension to works adapted many times. Exit François Civil, Vincent Cassel and Romain Duris, it is alongsideOulaya Amamra, Sabrina Ouazani and Deborah Lukumuena how the narrative will evolve. The story is thus turned upside down, many essential elements of the story seem to have been erased to fit the bias of the director of Divines.
When Sara, a young girl on the run, discovers that the Three Musketeers who protect the Queen of France are actually womenshe decides to join forces with them. The character, a reinterpretation of D’Artagnan, will follow their example and transform himself to be free, transform himself to be himself… This approach is reminiscent of that of Divinesreleased on our screens in 2016 and awarded the Césars three times. We find there the same desire to paint a picture of a youth in search of meaningto tell a initiatory journey through the window of feminism.
The trailer thus cultivates the mystery concerning the fate reserved for certain characters, and particularly the one who occupies the last part of Dumas’ novel. If Cardinal Richelieu is once again presented as the antagonist of the story, the absence of mention of Milady is notable. No Constance either, it should above all be about immortalizing the heroines’ struggle for the survival of the Queen as much as for the preservation of their common secret.

The return of cloaks and swords?
Public interest in the diptych The Three Musketeers and the undisputed success of Comte de Monte Cristo seems to have marked the return of swashbuckling narratives to the heart of the concerns of the giants of the entertainment industry. Having experienced a golden age between 1950 and 1960, with some resurgences in the 90s thanks to D’Artagnan’s Daughter worn by Sophie Marceau or Cyrano de Bergerac in 1990, it had disappeared from cinemas. The attempts of the early 2000s had buried this new momentum.
Since Pathé expressed its desire to deliver new adaptations of certain emblematic stories of the genre, we can only notice that many have also tried it. Recently, France Télévisions and Paramount+ joined forces to produce a series devoted to Zorro. Vincent Perez, who played Alexandre in Fanfan in 1993, also offered a film of the kind in 2023. Called A Matter of Honorthe film followed a feminist ahead of her time who sought out a swordsman to learn how to use a sword. The Three Musketeers with François Civil must have a sequel from the year 2027. All for one arrives as for him next January 22. It remains to be seen whether this passion of spectators for classic stories will be confirmed over time and whether a new golden age of the swashbuckling film is not far away.
