The Galaxy S25 should not arrive alone in January 2025. Samsung should take advantage of the presentation of its new range of smartphones to unveil its first pair of connected glasses, if we are to believe the South Korean press agency Yonhap News. Samsung would present the platform of its glasses before the end of 2024, in order to allow developers to prepare for the announcement planned for January 2025. Like the Galaxy Ring, Samsung would be satisfied with “a video or an image” during its event at the start of the year and would market its glasses in the third quarter of the coming year.
The “Galaxy Glasses” are not intended to compete with the Apple Vision Pro, as we might have believed when the merger between Samsung, Google and Qualcomm was announced. In February 2023, the trio would present themselves as a sort of “anti-Apple” of mixed reality whose ambition was to develop “the XR experiences of the future”. The Apple brand remains the preferred target, but Samsung’s connected glasses would rather seek to position themselves against the Meta Ray-Ban. The glasses of the king of social networks are a hit and tend to demonstrate that there is a craze for this type of product.
A long-standing project for Samsung, with Google and Qualcomm
Samsung’s glasses would therefore be geared towards augmented reality rather than virtual reality, favoring a lightweight format. Rather than an imposing immersive headset, the South Korean brand plans to launch a device in the shape of a pair of (sun)glasses. The glasses would only weigh around 50 grams and could be worn daily.
The announcement would mark an important step for Samsung and its partners, wishing to position themselves in a rapidly growing sector. Meta currently has a head start thanks to its partnership with Ray-Ban and its Orion project, but we also have to count on Snap Spectacles and models from China. Even Apple could soon launch connected glasses, in addition to Vision headsets.
The craze for Samsung glasses also comes from the direct involvement of Qualcomm and Google. The chip manufacturer, behind Snapdragon, has solid experience and already equips many headsets (HTC, Meta, Pico, etc.). The chip inside the glasses should be the result of a “strategic collaboration” between Samsung and Qualcomm while Google would play a major role on the software part. The “Galaxy Glasses” should offer smart features thanks to Gemini integration. We also expect more classic functions such as listening to music or the possibility of taking photos and videos.
More information at the end of January
Samsung is expected to hold its Unpacked event on January 22 or 23. The date has not yet been made official, but this meeting already promises to be major with the announcement of glasses and the Galaxy S25. The range would include at least three models (including the Galaxy S25 Ultra) while a Galaxy S25 Slim could see the light of day sometime next year.
