After a year of preparation, Amazon officially kicked off its expansion into the auto market today by offering Hyundai vehicles on Amazon.com and its app.
The new business, dubbed Amazon Autos, will let customers “browse, order, finance, and schedule pickup” of a Hyundai vehicle. But for now, Amazon car sales are limited to 48 US cities, including Boston, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
On the downside, it doesn’t seem like Prime subscribers get any added perks for buying a vehicle through Amazon. The company also won’t deliver the cars to buyers’ houses. Instead, Amazon Auto sources the vehicles from local dealerships, where people can pick them up.

The goal is to streamline the car-purchasing process through Amazon’s well-known website and app, which intend to offer transparent, haggle-free deals. “The price customers see at check-out is the price they pay, inclusive of all taxes and fees,” the company notes. “We put all the information you need to make an informed decision right at your fingertips, including individual vehicle features, customer reviews, pricing, warranties, and more. That way, you can make a decision without the stress of visiting a dealership.”

Customers can complete the entire checkout process through Amazon, which also offers financing options and the option to trade in an older car to help pay off the new vehicle. “With Amazon Autos, we’re bringing the simplicity and ease customers expect from Amazon to car shopping, one of their largest purchases, while offering dealers a new channel to connect with a broad audience,” say Fan Jin, Amazon’s global head for its auto business.

Access to Amazon’s huge customer base is why the e-commerce giant is confident that other automakers will join. “We continue to add more Hyundai dealerships, and next year, we will roll out additional manufacturers, brands, cities, and new functionality,” the company says.
Over time, Amazon Auto will also feature dealership reviews and leasing options.
