This is bad news for young fans of cinema and series. Launched for the first time in March 2023, Canal’s Rat+ offer has revolutionized the consumption of cinematographic and television works among under-26s. This plan initially billed at €19.49 per month (before increasing to €19.99) offers access to the entire Canal+ catalog as well as numerous streaming platforms. For comparison, the equivalent “classic” bouquet – Canal+ Ciné Séries – is billed at €39.99 per month. After being used to enjoying Canal, Apple TV+, Netflix, Max, Disney+, OCS and Paramount+ content at a very advantageous rate, subscribers under 26 will quickly become disillusioned.
First of all, the divorce between Canal and Disney has already started to impoverish the offer that was once so interesting. It has already been several months since users had to deal with the standard package with advertising on Mickey’s platform, but it is no longer even accessible. And to make matters worse, Canal is preparing to increase the Price of its Rat+ subscription. Some customers have started to receive an email indicating that from the next monthly renewal, they will have to pay a few euros more to continue the formula.
Terms still a little vague
On the official Canal+ website, the Rat+ offer is still displayed and marketed at a price of €19.99 per month. But existing users have just been taken by surprise. An email informs subscribers of new pricing, which will be applied on the next monthly renewal date of the contract in question. In our case, the email we received states this:
“We inform you that from the next monthly renewal date of your subscription on 01/19/2025, and in accordance with your General Subscription Conditions, your subscription will be renewed for successive periods of one (1) month. To continue to provide you with the best experience, the monthly price excluding promotions and options of your subscription will be increased by €2.50/month, when your contract is renewed.”
From 2025, the Rat+ subscription will therefore increase from €19.99 to €22.49. An increase that Canal+ justifies by “a daily commitment to offer you the best content in all themes: ultra-recent cinema, must-see films, the entire CANAL+ Original Creation series, major sporting events, documentaries and youth content…”
With the sudden disappearance of Disney+ and Disney releases six months after their theatrical release in the Canal catalog, this increase and the entertainment giant’s tirade are hard to swallow. Still in this same email, customer service invites subscribers who disagree to terminate their contract before the next renewal. So remember to monitor your mailbox and your Canal+ space so as not to undergo this price change without having consented to it. The official site has not yet been updated, suggesting an extension of the offer to €19.99 per month for new customers. To be continued.
