Switch sales (finally) exceed those of the PS2 in the United States

The ultimate record of 160 million consoles sold is the PS2 about to fall to the Nintendo Switch? For many years, the PlayStation 2 has held the record and number 1 position in terms of video game console sales. Recently, we learned that the console had just sold more than 160 million copies, a first in the history of the video game industry.

This record is however already threatened by the Nintendo Switch which, upon reaching the end of its cycle, continues to sell and achieve very good figures. We learned today that the console is coming to exceed sales of the PS2 on American soil.

The Switch following in the footsteps of the PS2

2024 will have been a big year for the PS2. A few months ago, the console officially entered the register of technological heritage of the future in Japan, confirming the impact that the console may have had at the time of its release in Japanese culture. It was also this year that the console’s official sales figure was updated, making it possible to formalize the 160 million machines sold since its launch in November 2000. Finally, the PS2 was also at the center of the brand’s 30th anniversary. PlayStation which has been celebrating this important date since December 3.

However, it is in 2024 in this very important year that the PS2 will begin to lose its throne which it has retained for many years. Indeed, we have just learned that the Nintendo Switch has just brought down the Sony console for the first time in the United States. With 46.6 million units sold in Uncle Sam’s country, the Switch is officially the second best-selling video game console in this territory ahead of the PS2.

Indeed, according to the latest data from Circana, the Switch has well surpassed the PS2, but the best-selling console in the history of video games in the USA remains the Nintendo DS. Globally, the Switch peaks at approximately 146.4 million units sold compared to 160 million for the PS2. There is a good chance that this figure will fall within the next few years and the end of production of the Switch.
