Portable video game consoles are poised for an exceptional year in 2025. All eyes are obviously turning to Nintendo and its Switch 2, but the world of PC consoles is also preparing to experience upheavals. During the next CES 2025, Lenovo should unveil a new accessible machine called Legion Go S. In addition to its Price which would be more affordable than that of the Legion Go, this new machine would be the first third-party console under the SteamOS flag. For several weeks, rumors have claimed that the Legion Go S will feature a button stamped with the Steam logo.
Lenovo makes friends with Valve and Microsoft
Lenovo hasn’t confirmed anything, but the company plans to host an event on January 7 titled “Lenovo Legion X AMD: The Future of Handheld Gaming Consoles.” A meeting which will welcome a special guest in the person of Pierre-Loup Griffais, co-designer of SteamOS and Steam Deck at Valve. Lenovo and AMD are calling him Valve’s “chief design architect” for the purposes of this event. That’s not all since Lenovo plans to bring another speaker on stage: Jason Ronald. The latter is none other than Microsoft’s vice president in charge of peripherals and the Xbox gaming ecosystem. He is also called the “next generation vice president” of Microsoft.
These presences inevitably raise questions and leave no room for doubt as to Valve’s intentions. The Steam Deck shook up the sector with SteamOS by reviving gamers’ interest in hybrid portable/PC consoles. In front of it, we have seen several Windows machines arrive and if the Microsoft system has qualities, it is not as well optimized as its competitor. Microsoft is aware of this and is seeking to adapt its offering by offering an interface dedicated to these machines.
SteamOS or Windows? Lenovo would offer gamers a choice
For its part, Valve has succeeded in its bet with the Steam Deck and would seek to open up to new partners. The company behind the Steam platform is working on a new “Powered by SteamOS” label, intended for third-party manufacturers who opt for its operating system. Interesting efforts which could push manufacturers, like Lenovo, to increase the number of variations. The upcoming Legion Go S will reportedly offer two operating system options, with Valve’s SteamOS on one side and Windows 11 on the other.
In the middle of this software battle, AMD would do well by offering Z2 Extreme chips. The latest leaks concerning the Legion Go S indicate that Lenovo is working on three models:
- Legion Go S (8ARP1) equipped with a “Rembrandt” Z2G chip (8 Zen 3+ cores for the CPU and a 12-core RDNA 2 GPU), more compact format with a 7-inch screen and more accessible
- Legion Go (8AHP2) equipped with the “Hawk Point” Z2 chip (8 Zen 4 cores for the CPU, 12 RDNA 3 core GPU) and which could act as an intermediate model
- Legion Go (8ASP2) with a Z2 Extreme “Strix Point” chip. A high-end console with peak performance, thanks to an 8-core CPU (3 x Zen 5 + 5 x Zen 5C) and a 16-core GPU (RDNA 3.5)
